The Halton Regional Police Service will be kicking off the 2008 Spring Seatbelt Campaign on April 14th, with a media event at the Halton Regional Police Headquarter Building.

The Halton Regional Police Service wants to remind people that seat belts do save lives and there use is the law. Four deaths in the Halton Region in 2007 and one in 2008 may have been averted if all occupants had been wearing their seat belts.

Chief Gary Crowell, Regional Chair Gary Carr and, representing the Minister of Transportation , Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn will speak to the media stressing the importance of seatbelts, car seats and booster seats.

The introduction will be followed by Chief Gary Crowell, Regional Chair Gary Carr, and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn performing spot checks on Highway 25 looking for non-compliant drivers and congratulating those who are buckled up.

The campaign will run from April 16th to 27th. The Halton Regional Police Service will assign all three District Response Units to this initiative; they will also be supported by uniform officers and volunteers from each district.

The focus of enforcement will be on the proper use of seatbelts by both drivers and passengers and there will be a strong commitment to assure the correct use of child car seats and child booster seats. It is reported that one in five children are buckled up correctly.
