A Single Vehicle Crash Claims a Life

At approximately 2:50 AM, on Saturday morning April 3rd 2010, a Hyundai Sonata was travelling westbound on Queen Street in the Town of Halton Hills (Acton.) The vehicle failed to navigate an s-bend in the roadway and subsequently struck a tree on the west side. The vehicle was occupied by three males and three females. A male passenger (22 yrs) of Halton Hills died on scene as a result of the collision and was pronounced by the attending EMS respondents.

A female passenger (18 yrs) of Halton Hills was airlifted to a Toronto area hospital where she remains in critical condition. Two other 20 year old female passengers, both of Halton Hills, were transported to a local hospital and were later transferred to a Hamilton area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two other male occupants fled the scene prior to police arrival. A search of the area for the outstanding parties was conducted by the police. Both parties were eventually located, treated for non-life threatening injuries and then taken into custody by Halton Regional Police Service. The driver of the Hyundai, a 22 yr old male of a Mississauga is being held in custody pending further investigation. The outstanding passenger, a 20 year old male of Mississauga, is also being held in custody pending further investigation.

Members of the Regional Investigative Services Collision Reconstruction Unit have taken over the investigation. At this time both alcohol and speed are being considered as factors in the collision.

As a result of the ongoing investigation by Halton Police, charges have now been laid. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Accused: Todd MCGOWAN (21 years old), of Mississauga

A second occupant of the vehicle is facing charges for matters unrelated to the collision.

At the time of the collision, there were six adult occupants in the involved vehicle (the accused, the deceased, a young man, and three young women). The names of the deceased and the additional vehicle occupants are being withheld at this time. One of the victims remains in critical condition.
