ActiVan Available for Holiday Booking This Year

The Town of Halton Hills announced today that its ActiVan service, a program providing public transportation for persons with disabilities and seniors, will take bookings for each day during the holiday season this year for the first time since its inception in 1981.

“The Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee quite rightly brought to our attention the fact that the Holiday Season is a time for sharing with friends and family, but with a hiatus on ActiVan operations between Christmas and New Year’s many disabled persons and seniors in the community were unable to use the means of transportation they have come to rely on the rest of the year.” said Moya Johnson, Ward 3 Councillor and Chair of the Accessibility Committee.

Town of Halton Hills Transit Coordinator Don Clarkson commented “We’ve made arrangements with an outside contractor to provide service each day between December 25th and January 1st including the statutory holidays of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Our ActiVan booking line will remain open during regular business hours (8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.) on December 24th, 27th, 28th and 31st. Bookings may be made as far in advance as seven days prior to the date of travel but no later than twenty-four hours before the requested trip. We’d like to remind everyone that our program is available only to those who are registered ActiVan users.”

Clarkson says the program has experienced a significant increase in ridership this year. In 2006, 2200 trips were taken but year-to-date in 2007 over 7000 trips have been provided. The Town began managing the program internally in September 2006.

ActiVan is a public transportation service operated by The Town of Halton Hills for both persons with disabilities and seniors. Any person with a physical, medical or cognitive disability and everyone age sixty-five or older may apply for registration. The program operates two wheel chair accessible vehicles providing curb-to-curb service to and from destinations within the municipal boundaries of Halton Hills. Regular ActiVan fares are $2.00 in each direction with trips outside of the normal hours of service costing $3.00 each way.
