All Schools Now Risk Watch Active

The final Elementary School to come onboard with the Risk Watch Curriculum has been welcomed into the Coalition. At the January 21st Coalition Meeting, members introduced and welcomed Principal David Rousselle and Teacher Representative Mme. Renee from Ecole Sacre Coeur as the newest members. Risk Watch Champion, Captain David Ford presented the latest members a complete French version of CD’s and binders, courtesy of the Risk Watch Coalition to compliment the French speaking school and students. Members of the Coalition include Representatives from the Catholic and Public School Boards, Halton Hills Christian School, Halton EMS, Halton Regional Police Services, Region of Halton Health Services, Recreation & Parks Department, Corporate Sponsors Cooperators’ Insurance, Canadian Tire, Georgetown Marketplace and Tim Hortons’. The curriculum is available in both English and French languages.

Halton Hills now has all 20 Elementary Schools actively participating with the Risk Watch curriculum. Mayor Rick Bonnette says, “These 20 schools have a combined student population in excess of 8300 who, at some time through their elementary years will be exposed to the values of Risk Watch”. Mayor Bonnette also says, “Risk Watch will ultimately instill safer behaviors in future generations and help prevent injuries from occurring in the first place”. Halton Hills is one of only 43 communities in Ontario that is Risk Watch active”.

Risk Watch is a comprehensive resource designed to provide children in Pre-kindergarten through Grade Eight with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to make smart choices in their lives in order to prevent unintentional injury to themselves or others. Unintentional injury is the leading cause of disability and death among school-age children in Canada. Most of these injuries are predictable and preventable. By educating children about risks and teaching them the skills to make safe choices, we can reduce both the occurrence and the consequences of unintentional injury.

According to SMARTRISK, a national injury prevention organization, almost 40,000 children and youth are seen in hospital emergency departments every year due to injuries in the home. Working on the premise of “Look First – Think Twice – Choose Smart”, some of these hospital visits can be reduced with time and effort.
