In a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott takes U.S. protectionist trade policies to task. “[Buy American policy] appears to be shutting out some Canadian firms from bidding on U.S. contracts at the state and local levels—even if these projects are funded with federal stimulus funds,” wrote Mr. Arnott. This, he says, is contrary to the sprit of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Mr. Arnott’s letter follows news that Hayward Gordon, a Halton Hills industrial equipment manufacturer, is moving some of its operations to the U.S. in an effort to meet the requirements of legislation barring Canadian products.
Both Mr. Arnott and John Hayward, owner of Hayward Gordon, have written many times to the Premier of Ontario to demand action from the Government of Ontario. Mr. Arnott has also raised it in the Ontario Legislature with the Premier and the Minister of Economic Development.
