(NC) – Multitasking is ingrained in modern Canadian culture. Cell phone users tweet while going to work and commuters perfect their make -up on the subway.

One place Canadians need to avoid doing more things at once is behind the wheel. Even though this is illegal in many provinces, it’s shocking how many Canadians still engage in some unnecessary activity. According to the Canadian Automobile Association, 8 out of 10 road collisions are caused by driver distractions including chatting on a cell phone, changing radio stations and grooming.

“Despite the temptation to use your time behind the wheel for more than just navigating, staying focused is a necessary safety and financial precaution,” says Wayne Ross, insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “If you get a ticket for distracted driving, you can drive up your insurance premium and damage your ratings.”

To avoid collisions and keep your insurance down, Wayne Ross offers these following helpful tips:

  1. Pull over for important calls: Most people know not to use their handheld cell phones while driving, but in absolute emergencies, pull over and park before attending to a call. This goes for text -messaging as well.
  2. Plan ahead of time: Avoid unforeseeable distractions by planning your route carefully. Check for weather distractions, ensure your children have seatbelts on, and eat before the ride to avoid snacking while driving.

By making safe choices, you can save yourself from unnecessary road rage and insurance premiums. More information is available from your insurance broker or online at avivacanada.com.
