
The Halton Regional Police Service wants to remind Halton residents that effective October 26th at 12:01 am Bill 18 –Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act, comes into effect.
This new legislation prohibits the use of devices with display screens and hand-held communication and entertainment devices that when used may cause driver distraction while driving.
Police will focus on educating drivers until February 1st, 2010, however officers can still use their discretion whether a charge is warranted, which would be by way of a summons.

Q. Can I use my hand held cell phone in an emergency?
A. Yes. Drivers may place emergency calls to the police, fire department and emergency medical services. If possible, drivers should pull off the road before making the emergency call.
Q. Can I use my hand-held cell phone or device while I’m stopped in traffic or at a red light?
A. No. Your vehicle must be off the roadway or lawfully parked on a roadway, it can’t be in motion and must not impede traffic.
Q. Does the legislation apply to all drivers?
A. No. Police, fire department and ambulance personnel will be permitted to use hand-held wireless communications devices in the normal performance of their duties.
