October is Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month. This year’s theme is Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, Healthy Work…A Positive Workplace Works! To celebrate the month, on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, the Halton Region Health Department will host a breakfast meeting for representatives of local businesses. The celebration breakfast will also provide an opportunity to recognize Halton workplaces that have made a commitment to healthy living by successfully achieving their 2010 Eat Smart! Workplace Cafeteria award. Eat Smart! is an award program that recognizes Ontario schools, workplaces, and recreation centres that meet exceptional standards in nutrition, safe food handling, and a smoke-free environment.

“The benefits that come from implementing workplace health programs take time, but they are well worth the investment,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “This special breakfast event acknowledges the time spent by Halton workplaces, and offers attendees the chance to reflect on and share workplace health achievements and strengthen their commitment to a healthier workplace.”

The meeting will be of interest to human resource professionals, occupational health nurses, union leaders, and health and safety and wellness committee representatives or anyone who would like to celebrate healthy change in their workplace. The breakfast takes place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Halton Rattlesnake Point Golf Club at 5407 Regional Road #25 in Milton (view map ). Registration is from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m.

At the event, attendees will hear from speaker and author Carole Bertuzzi Luciani. Carole connects with her audiences by sharing her quick wit, wry observations and high energy. A professional speaker for close to 25 years, Carole draws on her experience in education, healthcare, public relations and recreation to deliver sessions that are both thought-provoking and highly entertaining.

“If you haven’t already, now is the perfect opportunity to introduce workplace health to your organization,” said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. “Healthy workplaces focus on healthy lifestyles, occupational health and safety, and organizational culture. Both employees and workplaces benefit through increased employee satisfaction and retention, and decreased absenteeism and injuries.”
