Town of Halton Hills has again received first place honours from the Lifesaving Society. For the second year in a row the Town of Halton Hills was presented with the “Burlington Cup”. The cup is awarded annually to the Ontario municipality with the largest lifesaving program in communities with a population between 50,000 and 100,000.
The winner of the Burlington Cup is determined based on the number of certifications issued by a municipality. Each certification is awarded a different number of points based on its difficulty level. In 2008 the Town of Halton Hills certified 1,654 people in a variety of lifesaving courses, which totaled 16,801 points. This accomplishment is particularly impressive when you consider that the Town of Halton Hills earned more points than other more sizeable municipalities like Windsor, Guelph and Waterloo.
Congratulations go to the aquatic team. The Lifesaving Society celebrated their 100th anniversary this year and the award ceremony was hosted by the City of Toronto which was the site of the first meeting 100 years ago. Town of Halton Hills was well represented at the ceremony as the Director of Recreation, Terry Alyman, Manager Recreation Services, Joy Thompson and Facility Supervisor, Joanne Wilson were there to cheer on Town of Halton Hills’ aquatic accomplishments.
These accomplishments are a significant achievement for the town as it strongly indicates our commitment to water safety and advanced lifesaving programs and more importantly the value our residents place on this life skill.
The Town is pleased that Patrick D’Almada, President of the Lifesaving Society will bring the Burlington Cup to Halton Hills at the September 21 Town Council meeting. The Burlington Cup is like the Stanley Cup and only travels with a guardian.
Following the Council meeting, the Burlington Cup will be on display at the Gellert Community Centre for one week.
