(NC) – Many Canadians live busy lifestyles that keep them on the go. It makes sense that their money should be as mobile as they are. As smartphones increase in popularity, mobile commerce, the ability to make payments and money transfers through mobile phones, is poised to skyrocket in Canada. Making a purchase with a mobile phone is easy and convenient and companies like PayPal are providing safer and more efficient methods for making money digital.
Not convinced that we are ready to go mobile? Almost every minute a Canadian makes a mobile transaction with PayPal. A recent Leger Marketing survey indicates that almost 40 per cent of Canadians think that using a mobile device to make a payment is more convenient than using cash for items big and small. In fact, 36 per cent of Canadians say they would use their smartphone to buy something as expensive as an iPod ($272.30) or as inexpensive as a latte ($5.50).
Companies are seeing success with websites and apps designed to support mobile commerce. Cineplex Entertainment launched the Cineplex Mobile App that allows moviegoers to check show times and buy tickets with their smartphones. The app has surpassed one million downloads since its release in November 2010. Big ticket items are also being purchased with smartphones. Recently, a $369,000 Porsche Carrera GT was purchased using eBay’s mobile app.
“Today’s consumer is digitally savvy and appreciates the ease and efficiency of paying on the go,” said Nicky Mezo, head of marketing for PayPal Canada. “Canadians use PayPal as their digital wallet more than once every second because they know their financial details are never stored on a device, shared with the people or stores they send money to, or transmitted over a cellular or data network.”
It is free to sign-up for a PayPal account and the PayPal mobile app for iPhone, Android or Blackberry is also free to download. (www.paypal.ca)
