Fatalities on Halton roads continue to escalate. With numbers increasing 100% from 2006 to 2007, the Halton Regional Police Service feels it must take a more proactive approach for 2008.
“Motor vehicle collisions are the greatest public safety risk in Halton Region today,” said Chief Gary Crowell. “People are more likely to be injured or killed on our roads than by any other criminal offence. These tragedies are almost entirely preventable if everyone would slow down, buckle up and minimize distractions while driving. Every driver is responsible and accountable for road safety. Help police by doing your part to drive to arrive alive.”
The cause for this number of traffic deaths varies, but the number one aggravating factor in 12 of these deaths is attributed to speed.
Alcohol was a factor in 6 of these deaths.
The Halton Regional Police are encouraging the citizens of Halton to take an active role in reporting incidents on our road ways, which they feel are unsafe and dangerous to motorists and pedestrians alike.
