The Halton Museum Foundation presents its third annual Historic Christmas Feast at the Halton Region Museum, located inside Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Catered by Allison’s Gourmet Catering, the evening offers a modern take on traditional nineteenth century cuisine and entertainment harkening back to Christmases past.

“The Historic Christmas Feast is an enjoyable way to start celebrating the season with friends, family or colleagues,” said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “The Museum’s historic location, the authentic menu, and the lively entertainment combine to make for a very special evening to remember.”

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. with scotch tasting by the fireplace in the Loft Room followed by an elaborate gourmet meal offering a selection of traditional nineteenth century cuisine designed to please today’s palate and bring guests back to a time when “eating local” meant from your own backyard. The menu includes hearty soup, roast beef with gravy and horseradish, butter roasted turkey with traditional stuffing, sweet wine Victorian syllabub and more. Plum pudding flambé will complete the dinner – all served “family style” at fireside tables in the rustic and charming Hearth Room.

Guests will be entertained throughout the meal with a traditional Saturday night Ceilidh performed by “The Runes” a musical group featuring celtic harper/singer/songwriter Ruth Sutherland, multi-instrumentalist/blues harper/singer/songwriter Doug Feaver, and celtic fiddler Stephen Fuller. Ambient, saucy, and thoroughly entertaining, the combination of these three world class musicians promises a performance to be enjoyed and remembered for a long time.

The evening is a tribute to the Alexander family—one of Halton’s founding families who farmed the site from 1836 to 1961 where the Halton Region Museum is now located. After emigrating from Scotland in 1826, Adam Alexander I and his wife Margaret purchased 200 acres of land in 1836 where the Museum now sits. In the years that followed, four generations of Alexander’s settled the land and lived there until 1961, cultivating crops and breeding livestock. The Alexander Barn was one of the first electrically powered farms in southern Ontario and presently holds a vast collection of artifacts and exhibits for the whole family to appreciate.

The Foundation, an independent fundraising arm of the Museum, raises funds to support capital projects at the Museum through events like the Historic Christmas Feast. Current Foundation-supported projects include the refurbishment of two on-site buildings: the Piggery and the Drive Shed.

Tickets for corporate and personal tables are available through advance sale only, for $115 per person, by calling 905-875-2200 ext. 21. Visit www.halton.ca/museum for more information. Tax receipts will be issued. On Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 6 to 11 pm be sure to join in the festivities at this most enjoyable Historic Christmas Feast.
