Visitors to the Town’s main cemeteries will find it easier to find their way around thanks to new mapping recently installed at both Greenwood (Georgetown) and Fairview (Acton) Cemeteries. Developed by Recreation and Parks staff, the new signage clearly shows the various sections of the cemetery so that visitors are able to locate grave sites more easily. In addition, the signs indicate the location of the graves of some of the Town’s notable residents, along with a brief history of their contributions to the Town.
“Residents will likely recognize names like George Kennedy, John Barber, Robert Little and Sir Donald Mann,” said Cemetery Advisory Committee chair Councillor Bob Inglis, “but other lesser known names like the Shepherd family or Sarah Secord also made notable contributions.” Staff consulted with the Halton Hills Library and the Esquesing Historical Society to source photos and background information that appears on the new cemetery signage. “We feel that including some of the history of the area in the signage gives the cemetery some real context,” said Inglis, “and also provides important information on cemetery regulations and key contacts.” Next year the Town plans to install additional section marker signs to aid in wayfinding.
The signs are part of an overall communication program launched by the Town as part of its role in cemetery services. A revised Cemetery Guide for residents has been developed to explain interment options, pricing and ornamentation. Filled with photos and diagrams, the guide illustrates the various options available to residents when purchasing an interment site, often in consultation with local funeral homes. Copies of the guide are available at the Civic Centre (1 Halton Hills Drive, Georgetown), at local funeral homes or online at www.haltonhills.ca/cemeteries.
