Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr is pleased that the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Minister of Transportation has promised that the Province will not proceed with the Niagara to GTA Corridor through Burlington. For the past several months, Halton Region and the City of Burlington have been working together to lobby against the highway. In February, Regional Chair Gary Carr and Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring met with the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing who supported the Region’s view that the Niagara to GTA Corridor did not belong in the Halton Region Official Plan.

“I am very pleased with Minister Wynne’s promise,” said Regional Chair Gary Carr. “I would like to acknowledge Minister Wynne, Minister Bartolucci, MPP Ted McMeekin and Mayor Goldring for their efforts in resolving this issue. Together we have protected the Niagara Escarpment and our natural heritage for future generations to enjoy.”

On July 19 Halton Region released an advocacy document, A Strong Halton for a Strong Ontario – Partners for the Future, prepared in advance of the October 6 provincial election. In that document, the Region asked the next Provincial government to work with Halton to explore alternative highway routes that do not impact significant features like the Niagara Escarpment and prime agricultural land.

“Today’s announcement is a result of the combined efforts of many individuals, community groups and organizations. Working together we are making Halton a better place to live, work, raise a family and retire,” said Chair Carr.
