The holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for home fires. The beautiful Christmas tree is the leading cause of fire at this time of year and can quickly destroy the joyous holiday season that we all enjoy.
Fire Chief Brent Marshall says, “A home fire during the holidays is particularly devastating and that is why the Halton Hills Fire Department is asking those celebrating the Christmas season with a live Christmas tree, to follow these Holiday Fire Safety tips to keep our families safe”.
- Leave the tree outside until you’re ready to decorate.
- Keep the tree away from floor heaters, fireplaces, or other sources of heat.
- Use only CSA-Listed lights, and no more than 3 strands linked together.
- Use miniature lights which have cool burning bulbs.
- Examine light strings before installing them and discard any worn ones.
- Turn off the Christmas lights when you go to bed or go out shopping/visiting.
- Cut the stump approximately 21/2 – 3” from the bottom on a diagonal angle before putting in the stand.
- Check the tree daily and add water as necessary.
Mayor Rick Bonnette says, “Let’s work together and make holiday safety a priority this year. Don’t forget to ensure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and everyone knows how to get out if a fire does occur”
