“If you build it, they will come” took on a broader meaning at the November 9, 2009 Council meeting when four local sports groups were recognized for their contribution to the construction of Town sportsfields. Members from the Acton and Georgetown Soccer Clubs, Georgetown Slopitch League and Field of Dreams Committee were recognized for their collective contribution of over $700,000.00 to sportsfield development. Acton Soccer Club contributed $150,000 to the development of two senior, lit soccer fields at Acton Sports Park; Georgetown Slopitch League contributed $100,000 to the Trafalgar Sports Park ball diamond; Georgetown Soccer Club has committed $100,000 to the construction of three soccer fields and related park for Phase 4 of Trafalgar Sports Park; Field of Dreams Committee has raised $380,000 to date for the construction of an artificial turf community sportsfield and rubberized track at Georgetown District High School. All of these contributions facilitated the Town’s development of over $2.5 million dollars worth of sportsfields, as well as a strategy to develop a $2.1 million project in partnership with the Halton District School Board as part of the Reciprocal Agreement with the Town.

“These projects make a tremendous contribution to our Town,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “Their partnership illustrates how we can work with local groups to meet a common goal. Our strategic plan has provided clear direction for the growing need for sports facilities and the contribution from local groups takes us a step closer to that reality.”

In presenting the members of the sports group Executives to Council, Warren Harris, Manager of Parks and Open Space, noted their involvement from conceptual design through construction of the facilities. “We have had close to fifteen joint ventures with local groups in the past ten years and we continue to work with groups to secure funding or resources from various sources in order to meet our common goal,” he said. The Town has also secured $660,000 from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program and $90,000 from the National Trails Coalition for the development of three additional soccer fields at Trafalgar Sports Park and a boardwalk in Hungry Hollow.
