Next April, Halton Region, the Doctors’ Hockey Club and community partners will host Docs on Ice. A charitable hockey tournament, Docs on Ice External Link is hosted in a different city each year to raise funds for a local charity in the host community. In 2011, the tournament will be held in Oakville, from April 7th to 9th.

“We are pleased to join our community partners in supporting the Docs on Ice 2011 Charitable Hockey tournament as part of our Physician Recruitment program,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “As a former hockey player, I’m really looking forward to this event, and to be able to showcase Halton as a tourism destination of choice.”

The Doctors’ Hockey Club, host for the 2011 tournament, is made up of Halton, Hamilton and Mississauga hockey-playing doctors. With the help of local volunteers, the tournament raises funds through a combination of registration fees, sponsorship, donations and special events. Funds raised through Docs on Ice Oakville 2011 will support the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton.

Planning for the 2011 event is already well underway. Organizers are working hard to secure sponsors and find volunteers.

“Our goal is to raise money to create the “Docs on Ice Resource Centre,” said Dr. David Palmer, Chairman of the Docs on Ice 2011 Executive Committee. “This state-of-the-art facility in Oakville will provide needed resources to Halton residents living with Dementia.”

Corporate donations and sponsorship are welcome. According to Dr. Palmer, the Docs on Ice tournament offers an excellent opportunity for local companies to showcase their offerings and be recognized as champions in the community by demonstrating commitment to a local charity.

“We are thrilled to be the selected charity for the Docs on Ice 2011 tournament,” said Trevor Clark, Regional Director, Development, Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton. “The Resource Centre will increase opportunities for socialization, counselling and supports for people with Dementia and their families.”
