Docs on Ice scores big

Physicians and medical students from across the province battled it out on the ice in Oakville for a good cause at Docs on Ice 2011. Halton Region partnered with the Doctors’ Hockey Club and the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton to sponsor the Docs on Ice charitable hockey tournament as part of its physician recruitment program. Funds raised this weekend will support the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton.

“Halton Region has plenty to offer as a place to visit, but also to live, work, raise a family and retire,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “This year’s Docs on Ice event has been a wonderful way to showcase our many strengths. Hats off to the doctors, the volunteers and the sponsors who have worked so hard to make this tournament such an incredible success!”

The Doctors’ Hockey Club, host for the 2011 tournament, is made up of Halton, Hamilton and Mississauga hockey-playing doctors.

“I’m especially pleased that this year’s Docs on Ice Tournament happened in Oakville,” noted Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. “Events such as this set a terrific example for physicians, for the community and for our young people.”

With the help of local volunteers, the tournament raises funds through a combination of registration fees, sponsorship, donations and special events. This year, all proceeds are going directly to the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton in support of the Docs on Ice Resource Centre in Oakville.

“We would like to sincerely thank our sponsors for Docs on Ice Oakville 2011,” said Dr. David Palmer, Chairman of the Docs on Ice 2011 Executive Committee. “Through their generous donations, they have demonstrated support for the communities of Oakville, Halton Region, and for the Alzheimer Society. We recognize them as champions in the Halton community for showing support for local charity. We also would like to thank Halton Region and the many volunteers who have worked so hard over the past year. They have done an amazing job, and set the standard for future events.”

Since the first Docs on Ice tournament in Peterborough with eight teams, 29 years ago, the event has grown to include more than 800 physicians and 100 Medical Students, with over 50 teams. To date, Docs on Ice has raised over $1 million dollars for charity. This year’s tournament raised over $100,000. The final tally will be posted on Monday at www.docsonice.ca.

“This will be a lasting and appropriate legacy that will continue to have a presence and a positive impact in our community long after the final game has ended,” said Trevor Clark, Regional Director, Development, Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton.

Next year’s 30th anniversary tournament will take place in Peterborough from March 29 to April 1, 2012. The money raised from that tournament will go to the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation.
