Staff and students were recognized this month for achieving EcoSchool Certification at two celebratory events, one at Halton Regional Centre on October 6 for Oakville and Burlington Schools and a second at the Milton Sports Centre on October 20, for schools in Halton Hills and Milton.
“”(_)The EcoSchool Certification program”:http://www.halton.ca/health/services/air_quality/energy_use.htm#Q3, initiated in our schools and carried out by students, teachers, custodians and parent volunteers, really does make a difference,” noted Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. “This program helps conserve energy and improve recycling efforts at school. Just as important, students take these good practices home with them.”
Ontario EcoSchools incorporates environmental education as well as environmentally responsible action into the school setting. The program addresses waste minimization, energy conservation, school ground greening, and ecological literacy.
At the event, teachers and students were presented with plaques and shared details of their environmental initiatives. They discussed what they were most proud of, challenges faced and next steps. Representatives from Halton Region, Conservation Halton, Municipal Environment Departments and the Halton Learning Foundation were also on hand to talk about their support for the program.
“The Eco School initiative is another way we are working with community partners to empower our greatest environmentalists – you the students – to help us keep Halton Naturally the Best, a place that values natural heritage and diverse communities, while supporting a prosperous, sustainable future,” said Chair Carr.
