Compost Give Away

Halton Region’s popular Fall Compost Give Away returns this year on Friday, September 12, Saturday, September 13, and Monday, September 15, 2008. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Halton Waste Management Site located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton.

Approximately 26,000 tonnes of yard waste was taken in last year from all of the leaves, brush and yard waste material collected from Halton residents at the curbside and materials dropped off at the HWMS. Halton Residents are invited to come out to the Fall Compost Give Away to pick up some of this rich, garden-friendly compost as a ‘Thank You’ for helping to divert this usable material from the landfill, thereby extending its life.

“I would like to thank Halton residents for their ongoing enthusiastic participation in the bi-annual Compost Give Away event,” said Halton’s Regional Chair, Gary Carr. “The Compost Give Away program is becoming a significant tradition and a great way to help our residents, our local food banks and our landfill site.”

During the 2008 Spring Compost Give Away in May, 4,340 residents came to the Halton Waste Management Site and picked up approximately 2,000 tonnes of compost. Additionally, residents donated six tonnes of non-perishable food and $9,764 to local food banks as part of the Compost Give Away. Residents attending this year’s Fall Compost Give Away are again encouraged to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item or cash donation, which will be given to Halton area food banks.

During the Fall Compost Give Away this September, more than 1,000 tonnes of processed compost will be available to Halton residents. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. Information on composting and the Region’s new waste programs will also be available upon request.
