Compost Give Away

Halton Region’s popular Fall compost giveaway returns this year on Friday, September 18, Saturday, September 19 and Monday, September 21, 2009. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Halton Waste Management Site located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton

Approximately 40,000 tonnes of yard waste was composted last year from all of the leaves, brush, tree and garden trimmings and other yard waste material collected curbside from Halton residents and dropped off at the HWMS.

Halton residents are invited to come out to the Fall compost giveaway to pick up some rich, garden-friendly compost as a ‘thank you’ for helping to divert the usable material away from the landfill, thereby extending its life. To ensure a healthy garden a blend of 60% topsoil and 40% compost should be used.

“By regularly setting out yard waste materials for collection, residents have contributed to diverting 60 percent of waste away from the landfill,” said Halton’s Regional Chair, Gary Carr. As a result of ongoing participation by residents we are now in our 15th year of providing high quality compost free of charge.”

More than 1,000 tonnes of processed compost will be available free of charge to Halton residents during the three day Fall compost giveaway event. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven garbage bags or equivalent per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost.

During the Spring compost giveaway in May, almost 5000 residents picked up approximately 2,000 tonnes of compost. Additionally, residents donated approximately seven tonnes of non-perishable food and a record $12,172 to local food banks. Residents attending this year’s Fall event are again encouraged to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item or cash donation, which will be distributed to Halton area food banks. Information on composting will also be available upon request.
