A family of 6 who escaped an early morning fire can be thankful for the sounding
of a working smoke alarm. Waking the family from a sound sleep, the smoke
alarm allowed them precious time to escape the rapidly advancing basement fire.
Damage to the rural home located at 8851 Sixth Line is estimated at
$200,000.00.
Milton Fire Department, which received the emergency call at approximately
02:47 hours were first to arrive on scene. Met by intense heat and smoke coming
from the basement of the split-level 2 storey home, quick, aggressive actions by
firefighters contained the fire to the basement level of the home. The remainder
of the home suffered extensive heat and smoke damage. Shortly after receiving
notice Halton Hills Firefighters responded to support and complete the firefighting
operation. Staff remained on scene for a number of hours making sure the fire
didn’t extend into any hidden voids in the basement. There were no injuries to
staff or the public. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Deputy Chief Harry Olivieri says, “Here is another example where having working
smoke alarms, prove once again, lives can be saved. This family is able to share
their experience thanks to having working smoke alarms in their home”.
It is Provincial Law that every home is to be equipped with at least one working
smoke alarm on every storey including the basement and outside every sleeping
area. For further protection, smoke alarms also need to be tested and
maintained so that they work as designed. If you have a battery operated smoke
alarm, replace your battery twice a year. Also, all smoke alarms should be tested
monthly and it is a good idea to vacuum the smoke alarm too.
