Halton Region’s last regularly scheduled influenza (flu) immunization clinic will be held on Thursday, January 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville. With the completion of this community clinic, Halton Region will have held 10 seniors’ and 22 community flu immunization clinics.
“We are seeing an increase in influenza activity in the community. Fortunately, the influenza strains in this year’s vaccine are well matched to the flu viruses that are currently circulating,” stated Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. “Getting the flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and to prevent spreading the virus to others especially to those in high risk groups. The elderly, children under four years of age, pregnant women, the morbidly obese, Aboriginal people, and those with chronic health conditions are considered high risk groups and flu can be a much more serious illness for them.”
Residents can still get their flu vaccinations from doctors’ offices and walk-in clinics. Be sure to call the location to verify their hours of operation and vaccine availability.
While vaccinations are the best way to prevent illness, other preventative measures can reduce your chances of becoming sick. Cough and sneeze into your sleeve, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand rub, and stay home if you are sick.
