The start up of Halton Region’s new waste collection services on Monday April 7, 2008 including the implementation of the GreenCart program to approximately 135,000 homes, has been widely supported by the community with high levels of participation among residents.
“There has been a tremendous increase in the volume of waste being collected at the curb,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “Blue Box materials have increased by almost 30 per cent and approximately 75 per cent of residents are already participating in the GreenCart program. With so many residents already engaged in the GreenCart program, we are well on our way to achieve our goal of diverting 60 per cent of waste away from the landfill.”
These high participation levels have resulted in some minor delays in regular garbage and recycling collection including delays in GreenCart distribution to some residents who receive curbside waste collection.
“I would like to acknowledge the outstanding support for our new program during this first week of our new waste collection services. I want to thank you for your positive feedback on the collection changes and ask for your patience as we work out some of the delays residents may be experiencing through this transition period,” said Chair Carr.
In order to help minimize any transitional delays residents may be experiencing in their waste collection or GreenCart distribution, the Region has taken the following measures:
- Halton Region has made arrangements to provide additional vehicles and resources to assist with the collection of garbage, Blue Box and GreenCart material during the first few weeks of the new waste collection service. Residents who are experiencing a collection delay are advised to leave material at the curb as it will be collected as soon as possible.
- The Region has stepped up its approach to complete the distribution of the remaining GreenCarts. Residents who receive curbside waste collection who have not received their GreenCart by Monday April 14, 2008 are advised to call Halton Region at 905-825-6000, toll free 1-866-442-5866 or email accesshalton@halton.ca. Residents who live in multi-residential homes such as an apartment building or townhouse complex who do not receive curbside waste collection will be considered for the GreenCart program at a later date.
- All residents can visit attend one of the remaining GreenCart open houses to learn more about the GreenCart program.
- A dedicated hotline has been created for waste collection and GreenCart program inquiries. Residents can call Access Halton at 905-825-6000 or toll free at 1-866-442-5866 to be transferred to the hotline.
- Residents can also visit the Halton Region website for a daily status update regarding waste collection and GreenCart distribution.
