With Fire Prevention Week quickly approaching, Fire Chief Brent Marshall is challenging Halton Hills citizens to commit themselves to at least one fire prevention activity during their daily routine. “Whether it is a home inspection for potential fire hazards, throwing out damaged extension cords or an inspection/cleaning of your barbecue”, Fire Chief Brent Marshall says, “Eliminating what may seem to be the smallest threat against fire, could save a life down the road”.
Lifestyles today with the demands of jobs, families, financial commitments, sometimes take over other aspects of day to day activities. The hustle and bustle of our lifestyle just doesn’t seem to give us the hours and time we need to consciously make the best decisions that are necessary for a safe environment. Procrastinating to put the caps on the gas can later, or leaving the propane cylinder in the garage can prove to be a hard earned lesson in fire safety.
Fires are preventable when we make concerted efforts in our day to day activities at home or at work. As a community we need to help each other and work collectively to eliminate needless and senseless fire tragedies.
While we haven’t experienced any fire fatalities since 2004, Halton Hills is not immune to having experienced these tragic fires. These past ten months have seen truly serious house fires with very significant dollar losses and luckily, no serious injuries. Having working smoke alarms remains your defense against fire, so here is an ideal opportunity to test them and ensure they are working.
In closing, Fire Chief Brent Marshall says, “As we move forward, we will maintain a concentrated effort being placed on fire prevention, inspection and enforcement, as well as public education”, adding, “With little effort, we can eliminate these accidental fires”.
