Compost Give Away

Halton Region’s popular Spring Compost Give Away returns this year from Monday, May 5 until Saturday, May 10. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS), 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton.

Residents are invited to pick up some compost as a thank you for diverting over 26,000 tonnes of yard waste from the landfill last year. The rich, garden-friendly compost has been produced from leaves, brush and other yard waste material collected from Halton residents in the Region’s yard waste program at the curbside and materials dropped off at the HWMS.

“The Compost Give Away program is a tradition in Halton every spring and is a success due to our residents’ commitment to the environment and community,” said Halton Regional Chair, Gary Carr. “This is a great example of how a material that was a waste in the past can be diverted from disposal by the enthusiastic participation of Halton residents and turned into a valuable resource.”

During the 2007 Spring Compost Give Away event, 5,100 residents came to the Halton Waste Management Site and picked up approximately 2,000 tonnes of compost. In spring 2007, residents donated 8,000 kilograms of food and a record-setting $10,274 was donated to local food banks as part of Compost Give Away. Residents attending this year’s Spring Compost Give Away are again encouraged to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item or to provide a cash donation, which will be given to local food banks.

This spring, more than 2,000 tonnes of processed compost will be available to residents. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. Information on composting and the Region’s new waste programs will also be available upon request.
