Beginning the week of April 7, 2008, Halton Region’s new waste collection changes including the start of the GreenCart program take effect. Residents will now have weekly Blue Box and GreenCart collection and garbage collection every other week. Additional changes include:
“Residents should now be receiving their Waste Management Guide and Collection Calendar in the mail which outlines all the details of the new waste management services, specific collection days and information about the GreenCart program, said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “Residents can also visit Halton’s website at www.halton.ca to use our new online Search by Address tool – simply type in your address and the collection calendar for your area will appear.”
GreenCart distribution began on March 24 and will finish on April 5, 2008. Trucks have been delivering approximately 12,000 GreenCarts to homes each day including a Kitchen Catcher (small bin to collect organic waste in the kitchen), an information package and sample certified compostable bags, to all residents in Halton Region who currently receive curbside waste collection.
The GreenCart will collect kitchen food waste (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bones, pasta, fats and oils) and compostable paper (coffee filters, flour bags, paper coffee cups) creating valuable compost material that can be used in landscaping, agriculture and restoration projects. For a complete listing of acceptable items and to watch the GreenCart video visit www.halton.ca.
“I encourage residents to come out to one of Halton’s GreenCart open houses to learn more about the GreenCart program including acceptable materials, easy ways to keep the GreenCart clean, where materials go, and why the GreenCart is important to help divert up to 60 per cent of waste away from our landfill,” said Rob Rivers, Director of Waste Management. “There have been four open houses to date with eight more scheduled throughout each local Municipality. Residents can visit www.halton.ca for specific times and locations.”
