The Halton District School Board released assessment results of the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for Grade 3, 6 and 9 students. The Halton District School Board students are once again performing above the provincial average in Grades 3 and 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and in Grade 9 Mathematics.
Results from the Grade 9 Math assessment, both Academic and Applied programs, are well above the provincial standard (Level 3 & 4, or a B grade or above). On the Grade 9 Academic Mathematics assessment, 82 % of students, representing an enrolment of 2,955 students, achieved the provincial standard. On the Grade 9 Applied Mathematics assessment, 46% of students, representing 727 Grade 9 students, achieved the provincial standard.
“The results of the Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment reflects not only in math at the Grade 3 and 6 level, but also solid curriculum implementation in Grades 7, 8 and 9. We continue to look at the details of the results to inform our focus for this year,” says Ruth Peden, Associate Director of Education. At the Grade 6 level, results indicate students are above the provincial standard in all three areas. In Grade 6 reading, the Halton District School Board average was 67 % (provincial average 66%), the Grade 6 writing scores were 68% (provincial average 67%) and in Grade 6 math, Halton students scored 64% (provincial average 61%). These results represent the assessment of 3,615 students who wrote the test in May 2008.
On the Grade 3 assessment, students scores were also above the provincial standard. In Grade 3 reading, the Halton District School Board average was 67 % (provincial average 61%), the Grade 3 writing scores were 68% (provincial average 66%) and in Grade 3 math, Halton students scored 71% (provincial average 68%). This data represents the results of 3,473 students who also wrote the assessment in May 2008.
As outlined in the Halton District School Board’s Strategic Plan, we are committed to every student and their success.
“Our commitment is to see continued positive growth in our Grade 3, 6, and 9 scores. We recognize it takes time and support to improve student achievement. Our teachers strive to provide appropriate instruction for every student to meet the needs of Halton’s diverse student population,” says Peden.
“In Halton public schools, we have a large percentage of students at or above the provincial standard. However, we will never be complacent when it comes to looking for ways to improve,” adds Peden.
