The Town of Halton Hills was officially recognized as a Youth Friendly Community at a Presentation Ceremony held at Queen’s Park on Monday, October 4th, 2010. The Honourable Margaret Best, Minister of Health Promotions presided over the special recognition ceremony that paid tribute to the 6 Ontario municipalities who measured up to the Provincial standard of being designated “youth friendly”.
Mayor Rick Bonnette and Councilor Moya Johnson were on hand with members of the Mayor’s Youth Action Committee who worked diligently in submitting the arduous qualification process. “It was all worth the effort in the end” said Zuha’a Khan of the Mayor’s Youth Action Committee, “I believe that the Town of Halton Hills is a youth friendly community, because they are always proud of their youth’s efforts and manage to encourage, support, congratulate and celebrate every achievement”.
In answering ‘what it means to be a youth-friendly, Mayor Bonnette replied “ it’s a great testimony to know that so many of the initiatives Council has supported over the past few terms around youth engagement have been right on the mark, and I’m particularly proud of the efforts of the Youth Action Committee.”
Councilor Johnson added “engaging youth in shaping our community is not only important for youth, it is important to all of us as they will be the leaders of tomorrow”.
Receiving the Youth Friendly Recognition Award means that the Town can use the “Youth Friendly” designation that is the trademark of Play Works – a partnership for active and engaged youth, in all of it’s promotional efforts. This in turn will serve as a welcome sign for other youth to become increasingly more involved in community and civic matters.
