Halton Region is looking for the next generation of young artists to design the covers of the four 2009 Waste Management Guide and Collections Calendars. Students from kindergarten to grade eight who live in Halton Region are invited to submit their artwork to Halton Region for consideration.

“I am thrilled to help launch this contest which not only engages our young residents but also allows them to use their creativity in a way to help raise awareness about the importance of our environment and our waste diversion programs,” said Halton’s Regional Chair, Gary Carr. “I look forward to seeing all of the artwork that is submitted and showcasing the winning entries on the covers of the 2009 calendars.”

Entries must follow the theme of “more blue and green for a better planet” and feature a Blue Box, GreenCart and a positive environment. Entrants are encouraged to be as creative, expressive, bold and colourful as they can and create artwork by hand or computer. Acceptable materials for the contest include chalk, charcoal, collage, crayon, digital, graffiti, marker, paint, pencil, plasticine or photography. Entry forms can be found online by visiting www.halton.ca.

Four entrants will be selected to have their artwork appear on the cover of the 2009 Waste Management Guide and Collection Calendar, one for each Local Municipality, receive a prize package, and have their picture sent to the local newspapers. All entries will be showcased at the Halton Regional Centre during Waste Reduction Week, October 20 to 24, 2008.

Entries will be judged on overall suitability to the “More Blue and Green” theme, originality and creativity by a panel of staff from Halton’s Waste Management Services and Community Relations Divisions. Submissions to the “Calendar Cover Art Contest” are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday October 17, 2008.
