Constable Mike Dinsmore of the Halton Regional Police Service will receive the first-ever provincial Crime Prevention Media Award on June 16, 2010 from the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Ontario Media Relations Officers Network (OMRON).
This new award, sponsored the Insurance Bureau of Canada, is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to crime prevention by effectively harnessing the power of the media to assist the public and their police service in the prevention of crime.
Cst. Dinsmore was instrumental in developing the “No Valuables On Board” public awareness campaign to deter thefts from vehicles, which had been identified as a problem throughout Halton. The campaign was launched during the 2009 Crime Prevention Week, in partnership with GO Transit and with the support of the local media.
“Crime prevention is most effective when people work together to achieve a common goal, including the public, the media, partner agencies and police,” said Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell. “Through this campaign, Cst. Dinsmore engaged all our community partners and together, we achieved a measurable reduction in the number of thefts from vehicles. When fewer crimes are committed, everyone wins.”
A Burlington native, Cst. Dinsmore began his career with the Calgary Police Service in 1980. In 1990, he returned home to join the Halton Regional Police Service, where for the past 20 years he has demonstrated a strong commitment to community policing and crime prevention. He is currently assigned to the Regional Community Support Team, where he develops and implements crime prevention programs to address key public safety concerns. (PHOTO ATTACHED)
