
The Halton leg of the Ontario Chiefs of Police, Law Enforcement Torch Relay for Special Olympics passed through many Halton communities on Friday, June 3, 2011.
This year’s campaign was unique in Halton, as three individual relays are to occur simultaneously, covering Milton, Oakville and Burlington.
At approximately 9:00 a.m., the Torch will arrived at the Burlington Opening Ceremonies, which will commence at 9:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary School, 261 Plains Road East, in Burlington. The Torch was carried into the school area by a team of Halton officers, civilian staff and volunteers, and local Special Olympians and athletes.
An opening ceremony also occurred at the commencement of the Milton event, at 9:00 a.m., at Robert Baldwin School, at 186 Wilson Drive, Milton.
No opening ceremony took place in Oakville, however the opening ceremonies in Burlington initiated the Oakville Relay, which will got underway from W.H Morden Public School, at Morden Road and Rebecca Street, Oakville
The participating Special Olympians and athletes, police service members and community participants; including staff and students from the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic School Board, followed their routes and converge on Fothergill Woods Park, at Amanda Crescent and New Street, in Burlington, where the Oakville and Burlington post-relay ceremonies and picnic was hosted. Milton’s post-relay event was hosted at Halton Regional Police, Division #12, at 490 Childs Drive, Milton.
Many spectators and supporters assembled along the routes to cheer on the participants.
