The Halton Regional Police Service is actively investigating multiple residential break and enters committed in the area of River Road and Maple Avenue in Georgetown.
The multiple entries have occurred between August 1st and August 21st, while home owners are away during both the daytime and night time hours. The person(s) responsible for these incidents has disturbed areas within the home but has not always left with property in hand.
The Halton Regional Police is encouraging residents to be vigilant when securing their homes at all times and ensuring alarm systems are activated.
Tips While on Vacation:
- Whether you go away for a day or week, use automatic timers that turn lights on and off to give your home the appearance of being occupied
- Leave your travel schedule and phone number with a trusted neighbour or relative so that you may be contacted if necessary
- Also provide that neighbour with the phone number of a close relative or friend in case of emergency
- Leave a door key and key to your alarm system (if you have one) with a neighbour
- Let close neighbours know how long you will be gone and provide details about any persons who will be visiting your home during your absence
- Have a neighbour pick up newspapers and mail or discontinue all deliveries
- Arrange to have your lawn mowed or snow shovelled
- If you have a second car, leave it in your driveway or arrange to have a neighbour park their car in your driveway
- Check all windows and doors to make sure that they are locked
- Lock your garage
- Check with your insurance agent regarding home checks while your residence is unoccupied. You may not be covered if your home has not been visited while you are away on vacation.
- Consider a house sitter
- Above all, enjoy yourself knowing that you left your home as secure as you reasonably could make it
If unfamiliar and suspicious persons are noticed the Halton Regional Police is asking that police be immediately notified through a 911 call. Also, anyone with information possibly related to these incidents can either contact the Halton Regional Police Service 905-825-4747 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
