For the third year in a row, Halton has been ranked the safest place to live in the GTA and the safest regional municipality in Canada, according to Maclean’s 2010 crime ranking of our nation’s most dangerous cities released yesterday.

“Although crime rates are going down across Canada, last year in Halton we saw a significant 10.5% drop in our overall crime rate, which was already low by Ontario and national standards,” said Chief Gary Crowell, explaining that crime rates can be influenced by many socio-economic factors beyond police control.

“This notable achievement is due to the incredible support for policing and public safety shown by the people of Halton, who work closely in partnership with our officers, civilian personnel and volunteers to prevent and deter crime. Together, we are all doing our part to help ensure that Halton remains as safe tomorrow as it is today.”

Chief Crowell said traffic safety – something not included in Maclean’s ranking – is one area in which he would still like to see some improvements in Halton.
“One serious injury or fatality from a preventable motor vehicle collision is one too many, so I encourage all motorists to slow down, buckle up, pay attention to the road, and don’t get behind the wheel if you are impaired.”

Maclean’s based its ranking on aggregate results of the Statistics Canada 2009 per capita crime rates and Crime Severity Index (CSI) scores in six personal and property crimes: homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, auto theft, robbery and breaking and entering.
