This year’s Regional Chair’s Environmental Awards will include a new scholarship called the Halton Environmental Leadership Award. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in their school or community. The award winner will receive $2,500 for their post-secondary studies and a $500 donation will be made in their name to the environmental organization or charity of their choice.

“This new scholarship is a prestigious addition to our annual Environmental Awards,” said Halton’s Regional Chair, Gary Carr. “It is important that we support and encourage our young leaders to contribute to the community. I wish all of the candidates the best of luck and look forward to reviewing this year’s submissions.”

Sponsored by Bell Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation in conjunction with Halton Region, the Regional Chair’s Environmental Awards support Halton’s youth in achieving environmental excellence in their schools, community, and future academic studies. The awards also aim to inspire youth by promoting leadership and celebrating local youth environmental initiatives.

Individuals who wish to be considered for the new Halton Environmental Leadership Award must be nominated by a teacher, or a member of the community who has personal knowledge of the achievements of the student. As in past years, awards will also be given out in two categories: the Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence and the Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Scholarship. The submission deadline for all three categories is March 10, 2011.

The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence recognize an appreciation for the environment in our youth and raise awareness of local environmental initiatives, giving Halton elementary and secondary students the opportunity to win $500 for the student’s school.

The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Scholarship support Halton youth who have chosen to pursue post secondary studies that relate to the environment. Award winners in this category will receive a $1000 scholarship.

Complete award entry details, including application forms, can be found at www.halton.ca/environmentalawards.

Award winners will be recognized at the Regional Chair’s Breakfast on the Environment, held at the Burlington Convention Centre on April 21, 2011. This event will be attended by local students, the business community, and will feature Geoff Green, Canadian environmentalist and founder of Students On Ice. .

Organizations and individuals can show their support for the environmental efforts of Halton’s youth by sponsoring an award, a scholarship or by purchasing a table at the upcoming awards breakfast. Full details on all sponsorship opportunities are available at www.halton.ca/sponsor.
