Halton Region was recognized with a Platinum Ontario Waste Minimization Award by the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) at its annual awards ceremony. The Platinum Award is the highest level of award granted in the Municipal category and honours achievements in environmental sustainability and waste reduction innovations.

Halton Region was recognized not only for success with residential waste diversion programs, but also for external partnerships with key stakeholders such as the local school boards who work together with the Region to raise awareness with children and youth about the importance of the environment and protecting the life of Halton’s landfill site.

“Halton Region has placed an emphasis on effectively educating students — and their parents — about the importance of waste minimization and diversion,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “We have over 40 schools in the Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board, the Francophone School Boards and the Provincial Schools Branch who are now participating in the GreenCart program. The Region’s goal is to have all 125 schools within the school boards using the GreenCart by the end of the 2011-2012 school year.”

The Recycling Council of Ontario also recognized Halton Region for embracing the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle, internally with staff. The RCO highlighted the Region’s use of Blue Boxes and GreenCarts in Regional facilities, the Corporate Sustainability Assessment, waste diversion education of employees, and the reuse and recycling of items such as Regional electronics, ink cartridges, batteries and fluorescent tubes – even ambulances.”

“Halton Region was awarded the Platinum Ontario Waste Minimization Award for not only its residential diversion program but also its commitment and achievements to reducing its own internal corporate waste, employment of an effective communication and outreach program with residents and students, and its broad partnerships with school boards and other stakeholders in the community,” said RCO Executive Director, Jo-Anne St. Godard. “I congratulate Halton Region on this rare achievement.”
