Each year Halton Region celebrates the Week of the Child by hosting special activities for children, families and Early Childhood Educators at our three Regional Child Care Centres located at Maple Avenue in Georgetown, Margaret Drive in Oakville, and Sedgewick Crescent in Oakville. This year, events to commemorate Week of the Child will take place from October 14 to 17, 2008. The Week of the Child is designed to focus on the needs, rights and interests of children, and to heighten awareness about the value of quality early childhood education. Week of the Child is celebrated across the province.

“We know that early childhood education plays an important role in the healthy growth and development of children,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “Early Childhood Educators are providing our children with the skills that will help them to be successful in school.”

“The Week of the Child gives us an opportunity to honour the Early Childhood Educators that make a difference not only in the lives of the children they work with but in our communities, said Adelina Urbanski, Commissioner of Social & Community Services.

Halton Region provides approximately 150 child care spaces in the three Regional Child Care Centres and provides financial assistance on average to 1,300 children in community-based child care programs throughout Halton.

This year’s Week of the Child celebrations at the Regional Child Care Centres will include community presentations on topics ranging from dental health to the environment, a mystic drum workshops, storytellers and other great activities for children. The activities vary in each child care centre.

Week of the Child is presented in collaboration with the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario (AECEO). Events are being planned for children and their families throughout Halton and residents are encouraged to check local listings for activities in their communities.
