In a unanimous vote on Wednesday, December 16, Halton Regional Council adopted Regional Official Plan Amendment No. 38 (ROPA 38), “An Amendment to Incorporate the Results of Sustainable Halton, Official Plan Review Directions and Other Matters”.
“ROPA 38’s adoption is an outstanding achievement that everyone involved can be proud of,” said Regional Chair Gary Carr. Regional Council, our local municipal partners, regional staff, the Province, community groups, and stakeholders came together today in an unprecedented way to plan a sustainable future for Halton Region. The overarching goal of ROPA 38 is to move Halton Region toward a sustainable future. With ROPA 38, we truly will be able to live, work, raise a family and retire in healthy, sustainable communities where farms and natural spaces are preserved, where people can breath clean air and where people can find affordable places to live.”
As the final phase in the Sustainable Halton planning process, ROPA 38 focuses on planning for healthy and complete communities, creating a Natural Heritage System, and supporting agriculture.
With ROPA 38’s adoption, Halton Region fulfills the provincial requirements to plan for growth, integrates the principle of sustainability into its Official Plan and follows Halton Regional Council’s direction to limit sprawl and for growth to pay for itself.
ROPA 38 was the final step in the Sustainable Halton process, which outlines how and where Halton will grow from 2021-2031. This process began in 2006 as a response to provincial requirements set out in policy including the Places to Grow Plan, the Greenbelt Plan and the Provincial Policy Statement. It was one of the largest public consultation projects for Halton Region with over 50 open houses, regional advisory and public meetings, and meetings with community and other interest groups in the three-year period.
