On Thursday, October 30, Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr and Commissioner of the Region’s Legislative and Planning Services Department, Mark Meneray, accepted the Niagara Escarpment Achievement Award for the Halton Regional Forest Management Plan (HRFMP). Regional Councillor Allan Elgar presented the award on behalf of the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) and congratulated the Region for being a leading example in implementing ecologically-sound business practices and conservation efforts and setting high standards in both protecting and managing this extensive woodland corridor.

“I am very proud of our staff for having received this recognition from the NEC. It is truly well deserved,” said Chair Carr. “Regional Council adopted a Forest Management Plan in 2005 to guide forest uses for the next 20 years. The plan reflects the Region’s commitment to the sustainable stewardship of its forests because not only is their protection a key environmental issue, but their beauty enriches Halton region as an incredible place to live and visit.”

Halton Region owns 665 hectares of forested lands on 14 forest areas collectively referred to as Halton Regional Forest. Most of these forests are located in the Niagara Escarpment area, with nine of them designated as Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs). ESAs are land and water areas containing natural features or ecological functions of such significance as to warrant their protection in the best long-term interest of the people and environment of Halton.

The NEC is an agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources, and works on behalf of the people of Ontario to preserve the Niagara Escarpment as a continuous natural landscape – a vital corridor of green space through south-central Ontario. The NEC Achievement Award program takes place every three years.
