Over the past 12 months the Halton Regional Police Service has been involved in a pilot project regarding the towing of damaged vehicles from collision scenes. The goal of the project was to create a system whereby police officers could arrange for the removal of vehicles involved in a collision in a safe and efficient manner, by a reputable towing company.
As a result of the successful pilot project on September 1, 2010, The Halton Regional Police Service is entering a rotational towing agreement with several towing companies within the Halton Region. Participating companies were required to complete applications and were subject to a screening process prior to being approved as a rotational tow company.
Rotational towing companies by way of the agreement are restricted in terms of the maximum rates they can charge for their services. These rates have been approved by the Halton Regional Police Service, and the Halton Regional Police Services Board.
If a citizen is involved in a collision and their vehicle needs to be towed, and the police do not need to secure the vehicle for further investigation, the citizen will have the choice of selecting their own tow company, or request the attending officer arrange for an approved rotational towing company to attend. Rotational towing companies shall produce, when requested by the driver or owner of a vehicle, the rate list of tow charges.
If a citizen chooses a tow company that is not on the rotational list, charges are not governed by the Halton Regional Police Towing Agreement. The Halton Regional Police Service encourages drivers to plan ahead and be prepared in the event they become involved in a collision or a mechanical breakdown!
