Two popular Halton Region fall waste diversion events are fast approaching. Fall compost giveaway returns this year on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton. Special waste drop-off days will also occur from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Burlington Closed Landfill and Saturday October 22, 2011 at Mohawk Raceway in Campbellville to allow residents to recycle and safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic waste.

“Providing Halton residents with convenient, accessible options to participate in waste diversion opportunities is of the utmost importance to the Region,” said Gary Carr, Halton’s Regional Chair. “I encourage residents to pick up some garden-friendly compost as a ‘thank you’ for helping to divert this usable material away from the landfill and also to visit the drop-off days to protect the environment by properly recycling or disposing of any household hazardous waste or electronic items.”

More than 1,000 tonnes of processed compost will be available free of charge to Halton residents during the one day fall compost giveaway event. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven garbage bags or equivalent per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. To ensure a healthy garden, a blend of 60 per cent topsoil and 40 per cent compost should be used.

During the spring compost giveaway in May, almost 3000 residents picked up approximately 2,000 tonnes of compost created from all of the leaves, brush, tree and garden trimmings collected curbside or at the HWMS. Approximately four tonnes of non-perishable food and $7,000 were also donated by residents attending the event for local food banks. Residents attending this year’s fall event are again encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation, which will be distributed to Halton area food banks.

Special Waste Drop-off Days – September 24 (Burlington Closed Landfill), October 22 (Mohawk Raceway), 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Special Waste Drop-off Days were established to make the recycling and safe disposal of household hazardous waste and electronic waste more convenient for residents. Acceptable items for drop-off include pesticides, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks, computers, stereos, TVs, DVD players and VCRs. Residents may drop off these items free of charge. No commercial wastes will be accepted.

Residents who are unable to attend the Special Waste drop-off days may drop off acceptable hazardous waste (20 litres per trip) and electronic items (5 items per trip) free of charge at the HWMS, 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton, Monday to Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
