Halton Region has two new Vehicle Activated Traffic Calming Signs (VATCS) to help enhance road safety. The signs will be temporarily installed at various locations along Regional Roads and rotated to different locations over time.
VATCS are electronic LED road side signs. The sign remains blank until an approaching vehicle exceeds the speed threshold to trigger the sensor. The sign then lights up for three to four seconds with the speed the vehicle is travelling and the message to “SLOW DOWN.”
“We want to make sure that Halton continues to be the safest Regional municipality in Canada and these traffic calming signs help us keep our roads safe,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “The signs are a useful tool that grabs the attention of speeding drivers with a reminder to slow down, which helps improve safety for everyone on our roads.
Since the summer, signs have been positioned across Halton Region to increase driver awareness of speed and remind drivers to follow the posted speed limit.
This is the latest addition to Halton Region’s road safety program. Through the Drive SAFE program, Halton has “Speeding Costs” signs posted along Regional roads and online videos encouraging drivers to pull over for emergency vehicles to help remind drivers of road safety.
Halton Region also partners with the Halton Regional Police Service and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) on The Safe Roads…Your Call program. This program educates motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving and encourages them to call 911 immediately to report suspected impaired drivers on area roads.
RoadWatch is another useful program that enables residents to report dangerous or careless drivers to the police either by phone or by filling out an online form. A warning letter is then mailed to the driver advising them of their reported actions.
