Trails enthusiasts joined Mayor Bonnette, Wellington-Halton MP Michael Chong and Patrick Connor from the National Trails Coalition to celebrate the opening of Hungry Hollow’s newest section of boardwalk and trail.

“We have used the Hungry Hollow Management Plan to lay the groundwork for trail building, community involvement, and environmental awareness as well as other sources of funding to make those things a reality,” noted Trails Advisory Committee Chair Jane Fogal, “and it’s great to see people getting out and enjoying this great natural area.”

Town of Halton Hills constructed a 1.8m wide, 385m long boardwalk on helical piers with two rest areas along with connecting limestone screening trails. “This boardwalk provides a critical linkage in the overall Hungry Hollow Trail System joining the other 4km of ravine trails built since 2007 and will also allow travel through this environmentally sensitive area year round without disrupting the natural features,” said Recreation and Parks Director Terry Alyman.

Funding for the project was provided by the Town in partnership with the Canada’s Economic Action Plan (EAP) and the National Trails Coalition. The EAP contributed $90,013.00 to the construction of the boardwalk and trail connections in this area, in addition to the $100,000 provided by the Town,” noted Mayor Rick Bonnette. “We’re also proud that this work was designed and managed in-house and built by a local contractor.”

A community planting project led by Supervisor of Community Outreach Dave Beaton of Credit Valley Conservation involved the planting of close to three hundred trees and shrubs in an area of the ravine near the end of Metcalfe Court. Families, local high school students, members of P.O.W.E.R. and Recreation and Parks staff participated in the project.

Trail ambassadors greeted people on the trail to hand out trail guides, pedometers, water bottles and other giveaways and to get updates on the survey questions first asked of people in 2002 during the planning stages of the Hungry Hollow Management Plan.
