On December 8, at the inaugural ceremony at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville, Members of Halton Regional Council were sworn in for the 2010-2014 term of office. The Honourable Mr. Justice C. William Hourigan presided over the Declarations of Office. The Right Reverend Michael A. Bird, Bishop of Niagara, delivered the invocation.
In his inaugural address, Regional Chair Gary Carr congratulated Regional Councillors on their election. Chair Carr also discussed the themes of infrastructure, taxes and the environment while setting direction for a new citizen engagement strategy and the development of a strategic plan for the upcoming term of Council. As part of his address, Chair Carr highlighted the need for a Halton Region tax freeze for Regional programs and services for 2011.
“I am honoured to have been acclaimed as the Regional Chair, and I look forward to working with Regional Council over the next four years to continue to make Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire,” said Regional Chair Gary Carr. “We have achieved a great deal over the last four years, such as a combined tax rate of less than 0.5 percent, and I look forward to continuing to be leaders in the Province, and indeed in Canada.”
