John Duncan's Town and Council Update

First of all, my thanks to the publishers of in-Georgetown for the opportunity to give everyone a brief overview of what is going on in town and Council.

I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity of singling out our Public Works and Fire Services for a special mention.

As we all experienced this has been the worst winter in many years. We had to cope with an incredible amount of snow, ice, freezing rain and high winds and our Public Works people came through with flying colours. They did an amazing job of keeping us moving through the worst of conditions and deserve nothing but praise.

We all read about the CN Rail derailment. Our Fire Services received enormous amounts of praise for the job they did upon getting to the scene [in a blizzard] and for their professionalism in handling the situation. So, congratulations to Fire Services for a job well done.

To talk about the development in Halton Hills. Recently we received word from The Region of Halton that they are considering a substantial raise to the Development Charges (DC’s). What would this mean to the residents of Halton Hills? In my opinion and that of many others including Mayor Bonnette and Regional Councillors Fogal and Somerville – disaster. We feel that this would drive business away from Halton and bring to a halt development of the 401/407 industrial park. This in turn means no industrial tax base to draw from and leaves the tax base squarely on the shoulders of the taxpayers of Halton Hills and we find this unacceptable.

Mayor Bonnette and all of Council continue to fight this at the Region and we are guardedly optimistic of being successful.

While there are many other subjects to cover space limits me to this but I will be submitting more information about what is happening in Halton Hills on a regular basis and invite you to contact me with any questions, comments, or topics of interest relating to what is happening with Council.
