(NC) – Winter months can be hard on baby’s skin, which is why parents need to watch out for dryness, chapping and flaking. Cold, dry weather combined with indoor heating can deprive skin of its natural moisture, but with a little extra attention and care, baby’s skin can remain soft and delicate. Here are some tips on how to keep baby’s skin silky smooth this winter!

Clean up quick. Baby may love splishing and splashing in the tub, but in winter months, cut bath time down to no more than 10 minutes. Bathing can remove moisture from babies’ sensitive skin making them more susceptible to dryness. In addition to stripping skin of moisture, some baby soaps can even cause skin irritation – so parents, make sure the baby products are mild and gentle!

“Use an ultra mild cleanser like Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash,” says Deanna Vogelsong, R&D Scientist for the Johnson’s Baby Brand. “Unlike baby soaps, Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash cleanses without drying because it’s 100% soap free. The No More Tears formula is dye free, pH balanced, and clinically proven to be hypoallergenic. It’s dermatologist and allergy tested, so it’s gentle enough for newborns.”

Lather up! The makers of Johnson’s Baby products conducted a study, which highlighted the differences between adult and baby skin. Compared to adult skin, baby skin is constantly developing at a rapid pace. It’s more vulnerable to irritants, to changes in temperature and to changes in humidity.

As a result, baby’s skin absorbs and loses moisture quickly. Combat this by using a gentle moisturizer like Johnson’s Baby Lotion to help replenish moisture or to help maintain baby skin moisture. Be sure to avoid excessive toweling off too – a good pat-down will suffice.

Humidify the room. Cold, dry outdoor air means hot, dry heated indoor air – neither of which is good for baby’s skin. Try placing a cool air humidifier in baby’s room to keep skin hydrated.
