Wellington-Halton Hills MPP presents public petitions in the Ontario Legislature
When it comes to the provincial gasoline tax, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott is making sure citizens have their say.
After launching a petition in June, Mr. Arnott took the opportunity on the second day (September 23rd) of the Ontario Legislature’s fall session to begin presenting the petitions he has received. He will continue presenting them in the coming days.
“These petitions are a sign that people are interested in this issue,” said Mr. Arnott. “I want to thank them for that, and I encourage them to keep spreading the word.”
Mr. Arnott’s gas tax petitions calls on the McGuinty government to redistribute gas tax revenues fairly to all municipalities across Ontario, including those in Wellington-Halton Hills. It’s also a good way, said Mr. Arnott, to make a point about high gas taxes.
“People in our riding pay the gas tax, and we have a right to see some of that money reinvested right here at home,” said Mr. Arnott. “Many of our roads and bridges are in bad shape, and we need our own money to repair them.”
The only municipalities now eligible for predictable gasoline tax transfers from the province are those operating mass transit systems. Federal gas tax revenues, however, are already shared among all municipalities, both large and small.
