In front of a gathering of approximately 5,000 people on August 16th at Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott gave the following remarks in celebration of the 61st Independence Day of Pakistan:

“Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen:

“I’m delighted to join with the Deputy Premier and the Minister of Education for the Province of Ontario, to be here with you today to celebrate the 61st Independence Day of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

“I bring greetings on behalf of Ontario PC Party Leader John Tory, and my Progressive Conservative colleagues in the Ontario Legislature. Throughout his life, John Tory has demonstrated his sincere respect for the cultural communities that contribute so much to the fabric our nation and our province. John Tory believes you have every reason to be proud of your achievements in promoting Pakistani culture in communities across Ontario, and I concur.

“In the long history of the world, there has been turmoil and triumph as societies have evolved and peoples have overcome oppression. The history of Pakistan since 1947 has included hardship and struggle for its many millions of people. But today, Pakistan hopes for a better future. The determination of its citizens will ensure just that.

“So many of you here today came to Canada, proud of your country and your heritage, yet seeking to begin life anew, believing in what Canada represents—tolerance, diversity, respect, and freedom for all. Just as the Pakistani community has benefited from Canada, Canadians have been enriched by your presence. You and your families have helped to make Canada what it is—a beacon of hope and opportunity for people all over the world.

“Together, we know that the 21st century belongs to Canada. Together, as Canadians, we will help to shape that future, ensuring our children and grandchildren inherit a better world than the one we know today—more peaceful, more progressive, more prosperous.

“Congratulations on your Independence Day!”
