Numbers Indicate Old Message Not Being Adhered To

The numbers are in, since January 1st, 2010, 295 drivers on Halton roads have been arrested for Impaired Driving. The following is a break down of those charges:
TOWN / CITY Impaired Charges
- Burlington 123
- Halton Hills 36
- Milton 49
- Oakville 87
The decision to drive after you have been drinking can be a very expensive decision, not only monetary, but life changing. Make the right decision this holiday season.
The laws surrounding impaired driving send a strong message, this kind of activity will not be tolerated. Did you know?
- For a first offence a driver will have his licence suspended for a year and pay a fine of not less than $1000.00 dollars.
- After the year suspension the driver, at his own expense will have to install an Ignition Interlock into his vehicle.
- For a second offence the driver will have his drivers licence suspended for 3 years and face imprisonment for not less than 30 days. At the end of those 3 years, the driver, at his own expense will have to install an Ignition Interlock System on his vehicle.
- The driver will also have to participate in a “Back to Track Course” for 11 months.
- For a subsequent offence to imprisonment for not less than 120 days.
- Police will also be empowered to compel participation in roadside physical coordination tests if they have reasonable suspicion that the driver of a vehicle has consumed a drug or alcohol or a combination of both.
If that isn’t bad enough lets look at the personal penalty of an impaired driving conviction:
- You will have a permanent Criminal Record that may prevent you from entering certain countries.
- Job lose or possible denial of future employment
- You may be classified as a “High Risk” driver and either forced to pay an increased insurance rate or risk the policy being canceled altogether.
But more importantly, what about the possible loss of life or personal injury to someone else or you.
As we enter the holiday season the Halton Regional Police Service report that of the 13 fatalities recorded this year, alcohol was a contributing factor in 4 of them.
Tips in eliminating Impaired driving:
- Don’t risk it – If you plan to drive, don’t drink.
- Choose a sober designated driver before partying.
- Take mass transit, a taxicab or ask a friend to drive you home.
- Spend the night where the activity is being held.
- Immediately report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
- Always wear your seat belt – it’s the best defence against an impaired driver.
