The Official Groundbreaking Ceremony, led by Mayor Rick Bonnette Thursday, April 28, 2011, for the Halton Hills Cultural Center and the Halton Hills Public Library – Georgetown Branch located at 9 Church Street in Halton Hills (Georgetown), Ontario. Designers are aiming for LEED certification at the Silver Level with many state of the art green environmental initiatives planned.

Renovations and construction for the expansion to the existing facility on the site will commence in May 2011 and will be completed by the Fall 2012. Temporary services for the Halton Hills Cultural Centre Box Office and Halton Hills Public Library – Georgetown Branch are located at 224 Maple Avenue, Georgetown. Interim theatre performances are being held at the Irene McCauley Theatre at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School.

In September 2007, the Town of Halton Hills Council approved an extensive renovation and expansion of the Georgetown Library Branch to approximately 34,400 square feet. This new space allows the Library to expand its collections, offer comfortable study, reading and conversation spaces, provide improved space for programs and better meet the demand for Internet stations. In addition to being universally accessible and energy efficient, the new space will include a seniors’ lounge, a listening/viewing centre, small group study rooms, a local history room and, courtesy of the Friends of the Library, a double-sided fireplace.

The facility renovation and expansion also provides for significant structural alterations to the Cultural Centre. These alterations include improvements to the shared entrance lobby and washrooms to allow for greater space and functionality, a multi-function meeting room on the lower level, a dedicated coat check and concessions area, and a second set of washroom facilities for theatre users.

The Halton Hills Public Library Board received Council funding approval for the Georgetown Branch Renovation/Expansion Project in September, 2008 in the amount of $11.6 M. Cultural Centre alterations were also approved in the amount of $1.9M, so that renewal of both spaces could be completed concurrently.
